Subject: Swimming!!

Hi everybody- Pickle here.

Just thought I'd let everyone know I've just had my first swim of the year in the sea!!  It was great, although Mum kept calling me to come back - something about it being too cold.

We came back home and while Daddy made me a cup of tea - two sugars please - Mum dried me off with a big towel - great fun!!  Only down side was I had to put up with her brushing me.  I don't mind my tummy being brushed but I hate it when she does my feet as it tickles.

Hope everybody is OK.

Lots of woofs and wagging of tail,

Pickle XXXXX

Subject: 'Angus', the Scottie hero

On 15th March 2011, the Wolverhampton Evening Newspaper, 'The Express & Star' featured an article about Angus, the Scottish Terrier who alerted a neighbour when his owner had a diabetic relapse.  The article was also included on the Scottish Terrier News website.

Perhaps other Scottie lovers may be interested.

Very best wishes

Editor's note: A lovely story - hope 'Angus' is rewarded for his heroism and his Mum's ankle heals well.

Dear Marion

I have read the responses to my loss of Bonnie and would like to thank those Scottie lovers for their kind thoughts and to pass on my love to you on your loss of Piper and to thank you for being there for me.  They steal our hearts but we would not miss a moment with our little pals.  I was given my first Scottie at the age of 8 and throughout the years each one is remembered with love.

Lots of love Ann, Andrea and Molly (who is missing her pal)

Subject:'Piper'

Roger and I would like to express our thanks to everyone who has sent us kind messages of support following the recent loss of our dearly loved Scottie, Piper.  They are very much appreciated.

As some of you may know, we rescued Piper from local holding kennels in October 2007, where he was 'doing time' after being picked up as a stray on a busy main road and he was never claimed.  Piper was in a bad way at the time of rescue and thought by our vet to be between 8 and 10 years of age.  Between us we sorted him out and with time, love and patience Piper settled into his new home, enjoying life to the full and particularly spending time with Lottie, his Scottie pal.  Sadly Piper was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2010 and we were told he may have just a few weeks left to share with us, but he managed 8 months, until 22nd March 2011, when the vet and I agreed it was time to let him go.  Piper went to sleep peacefully in my arms and is now laid to rest at one of his favourite spots in the garden.

Piper's memory will live on in our hearts, along with those of Mac, Buttons, Hamish, Angus, Jamie, Kim, and Brock.

We know that many of you also look back to the times you shared with your own loving pets so we wish you 'Fond Memories'.

Thank you all so much for your kindness.

Marion, Roger and Lottie XXX

Dear Ann

I know all our thoughts are with you and this is such a sad time.

When I looked at the photo of Bonnie I thought what a very happy Scottie, and when she was looking into the camera really she was looking at you with love forever.

I haven't forgotten you - why would I?

I have some devilish photos to send you.  They were taken at Mum's birthday party.  When you see them you will see what I mean.  You always look so perfect - I'm sure you are a wee devil yourself.

Keep looking.

Hi All,

Mummy told me about the messages that Dudley Bear and his Mum, and Jamie and his Mum have sent me.  Thank you both very much.

I'm living up to my name at the moment.  Every time I pick up my favourite toy and give it a shake Mummy appears with her camera and tries to take a photo - so I run away - he! he!  She got me this morning though.  I was sitting next to a Westie statue that she has in her garden, having a doze in the sun - as you do - when she appears and takes a photo!

'Book Ends'

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Lots of woofs and wagging of tail,

Pickle

Subject: Billy's Story

Dear Marion

I don't know if you recollect that I was trained in horticulture and specialised in arboriculture and have worked in tree ecology and preservation for over thirty years so, also being a Scottie dog lover, imagine how pleased I was to discover that David Douglas, one of the greatest plantsmen, who introduced so many great species of trees to Britain, including the majestic Douglas Fir, owned a Scottie called Billy.

David Douglas was the son of a stonemason who started working life as an apprentice gardener.  He rapidly progressed up the ranks and eventually became a plant collector for the Royal Horticultural Society.  He made a number of expeditions to North America but it was on what proved to be his last that he took with him a Scottie called Billy.

Billy was Douglas's faithful companion throughout his journeys criss-crossing the Pacific coast, during which time both Douglas and Billy survived the overturning of their canoe.  Apparently Billy was accepted by the natives but loved chasing their cats.

On the final leg of his journey in Hawaii Douglas fell into a bull pit and was killed.  Billy, loyal to the end, stayed by the pit until Douglas was found and laid to rest in Hawaii.  Billy was taken in by a Foreign Office official and it is believed Billy spent his later years living near St James Park.

I discovered this information when I read an extract from a book about trees called 'Out of the Woods - An Armchair Guide to Trees', by non other than Will Cohu, of 'Parker - Urban Dog' fame, which is a delightful publication and one that I can strongly recommend.

Very best wishes,

Dave Hewitt

Editor's note: I thought I would share this email with you all as it is something I wasn't aware of.   This 'snippet' from Billy's life may also promote a 'fact finding' debate.   Are any of you able to enlighten us further?

Loved your story - at last a happy ending - always my favourite.

I loved the photo of you.  We have something in common.  You have one ear pointing down and I have a matching pair - not 'brothers in arms' but 'brothers in ears'.

I look forward to more news.  Take care.
