Hi All
Thank you so much for welcoming Jake into our family. I would like to say that Norman and Jake's story is coming soon with lots of pictures. Jamie, thank you for asking, Norman's birthday is 30th June (9 years old), and we are unsure of Jake's, so his birthday will be the day we got him home which is the 19th April (we are thinking he will be 3 next birthday!).
Lots of love, licks and woofs

Hi Marion,
Just a quick note to say Badger looks so happy to be in his new home and I hope he has many years of happiness with Lottie. I didn't get to spend much time with him on the trip back from Ireland but he seemed to be a little gentleman and had a good set of lungs - when the rest of his family started to bark Badger wasn't going to be left out of the bedlam (seven vocal Scotties in one car) - not a peaceful journey.
Good luck and heartfelt thanks for taking Badger into your home and heart.
Kindest regards,
Karen, Maddie and our new addition Teddy (one of the seven).
Editor's note: For many years Karen has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Scottish Terrier Emergency Care Scheme (STECS) to rescue and re-home Scotties from Ireland. All credit to Karen for going over to Ireland and bringing these 7 Scotties back for re-homing. Well done Karen!!

A very warm welcome to Jake. Having Norman as his best friend is wonderful. Norman has the nose and know how to guide Jake, and has made Jake welcome in his forever home. My Dudley Bear came from STECS. They do such a fantastic service to Scotties - very caring people - I know, I cannot thank them enough.
So looking forward to hearing about Jake's and Norman's adventures.
Take care.

Hi Marion
Congratulations on the arrival of Badger. I haven't checked out your website for just under a week so only just found out - what a handsome man he is!! Like yourselves, my husband and I received a lovely present via STECS (Geoff and Lorraine) on the 19th April - a little brother for Norman by the name of Jake. Jake is 3 (if not younger we feel) and is full of energy. He is very vocal and is into everything, thus not having time to read all the lovely stories on this website!! He loves his playtime and walkies and has taken very well to clicker training, particularly for recall, and has toilet trained himself with the help of the lovely Norman Bear.
He has settled in well and has made lots of doggy friends already and loves spending time in the garden running on the grass.
I would like to thank everyone from STECS involved in the rescue of Jake (all the way from Ireland), especially Geoff and Lorraine who drove into the night to make sure this little boy reached his forever home safely. He is loved dearly already!
I have enclosed a picture of Jake (left) and Norman, spending time in the garden.

Hi Elly
Thank you for introducing Jake to us - we have already met Norman when he was a runner up in the 2011 Photographic Competition.
Jake and Badger must have been 'ship mates' on the ferry from Ireland.
So pleased to hear Jake has settled in well and Norman is being the perfect role model for him. I'm sure they will have lots of fun and a great life together with you.

Hi Marion,
Have just seen Badger - he is sooo handsome. I agree a new collar is essential - my three were the same - they preened once they got the new collar on. He is just a little older than Bailey - hopefully we'll have both of them for a long time to come. Badger seems to be finding his paws quickly. Thank God he and Lottie get on well.

Marion,
Many thanks for the ‘Doggie Delights’; the parcel arrived safely and has proved quite a hit with friend Ramsey. He couldn’t work the little piggy out at first; he has now managed to make it grunt, but is still very puzzled why. I’m including two photos of Ramsey with the contents of the prize, am working on Thorn’s story (it’s proving quite cathartic to reprise Thorn’s life, and relive events that had over time become buried in the memory), and will be in touch again shortly.

Dear John,
I just wanted to say what a wonderful picture of a wonderful Scottie, Thorn. I almost feel like I know him just from the picture that you took John. It has brought a tear to my eye to see such a picture. I can see he was a very special boy. I was surprised to see he was so much older than I thought; he seemed so very young in the picture ... must be the thoughts dancing in his head just as you took the picture John. I think he was imagining himself dashing in fields with the wind in his face and all the wonderful smells in the air. Thank you so much for sharing this picture with us; I shall look at it over and over again as it makes me feel so good.
Please put some more pictures on of your lovely Scotties - I would love to see them - and I look forward to reading about Thorn's life too.

Editor's note: With John's permission I am sharing this lovely message, received following the news that John had won the 2011 Photographic Competition. John has also been so kind as to agree to provide a story about Thorn's interesting life which we shall publish once available.
Marion,
This has taken me very much by surprise; although the photograph has a special meaning to me, it did seem to be very plain when compared to many of the other characters amongst your competition entries.
The photograph was taken in January 2006. Thorn seemed to find some pleasure in feeling the wind ruffling his featherings. In the photograph he is relaxing on top of the Thames sea/river flood defences in the early afternoon. We’d walked northwards along the seawall from Coalhouse fort near the village of East Tilbury. It is as far as we could go at this point, and although it is adjacent to one of the major landfill sites for London’s rubbish, it is a very attractive spot on the riverside where the river turns east and opens out into the estuary. It was quite cold, the wind was coming straight up the river off the North Sea and had quite a bite, but in the sun it was a very pleasant afternoon and we were taking a break. I was sitting on the end of the seawall and lying back on the earth embankment enjoying the day when having not heard anything for a while I rolled over to my left to look for Thorn. He was on top of the embankment above my left shoulder, as you can see him in the photograph, with the wind lifting his whiskers and blowing back his eyebrows. To get the photo I had to reach for my camera without any sharp movement that may have disturbed him, and from a very awkward position take the photo over my left shoulder while lying on my back.
Unfortunately, Thorn passed away in August last year; he was 13, and had contracted a fungal infection that was causing a rapid onset of paralysis in his spine/back legs. He had always been a very fit dog and was in other ways in excellent condition for his age so it was a very difficult decision to make to have to have him put to sleep. The prognosis was not good, the treatment would be traumatic and prolonged for him, and had only a very slim chance of success.
I’m not sure if you have access to the Scottish Terrier Breeders' & Exhibitors' Association Yearbooks, but Thorn had a regular feature in the Yearbook over the last decade, telling his side of our joint fundraising mountain climbing project, on behalf of a charity supporting clinical research for ovarian cancer. He has a very interesting life story if you would like to hear it.
I do have another Scottie, a seven year old called Ramsey, a refugee from the Scottish Terrier Emergency Care Scheme, who came to me when he was two and is a bit of a loveable rogue. He doesn’t have the stamina of Thorn, but I’m sure that he will be grateful to his lost friend for the ‘Doggie Delights’. It may be fun getting him to pose with such an interesting display, but I’ll do my best.
Many thanks again to you and to everyone who voted for Thorn, it has come as a very pleasant surprise, and put a touch of damp in the corner of my eye.
John

Hi Rocky and Dorothy
Welcome to Scottie Dog Lovers.
My - what a beautiful photo - you look sooo mischievous.
If it’s any help to Dorothy and, of course, not forgetting Rocky, I have a 15 year old who was diagnosed with Cushing’s two years ago and since she has been on the medicines she has gone from strength to strength. I would go as far as to say I have a new dog. I totally understand the horror of reading about Cushing's and just how frightening the reading can be, but my advice is to know about it, but don’t dwell on it - just keep on giving the tablets and watch the lad live a perfectly normal happy life. In fact it won’t surprise me if you have already noticed an improvement in him already.
Best wishes to you both.

Mum and Dad took me down to the doggie warehouse where they let me choose a new squeaky ball. They also bought me a new chew!! When the postman came - I gave my usual bark - there was a card for me from my friends Bonnie and Daisy and their owners who are on holiday. I've just come back from a lovely run in the park and am a bit tired now so I think a sleep is called for.
Thank you again.
